Religious Hypocrites Supporting Divine Biblical Inspiration

I had a sudden revelation while I was brushing my teeth. I was pondering how the cynical secular attitude is “Christians are all self-righteous, religious hypocrites!” (And lets face it, we are at least some of the time) and it suddenly occurred to me how that fact is a strong proof for the fact that the Gospel as it occurs throughout the Bible is the result of divine inspiration and not the creation of human imaginations.

What do you Think about when you’re brushing your teeth?

If you’re a Christian and someone tells you that all Christians are self-righteous, religious hypocrites, here are your top three replies:
1. That can be the common ground on which to build our friendship!
2. It’s a good thing Jesus loves messed up sinners like us.
3. That’s true, which only goes to prove that the Gospel is the divinely inspired Word of God

Before I can explain my theory, I need to set up the premise, which means you need to understand the Gospel- the central and reoccurring theme of the Bible.
The Gospel has been summed up by the Apostle Paul in Romans 3: 21-25 “But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood.”

There’s some real key things in here you need to understand to follow my theory:
1. Righteousness APART from the law- so, not earned by keeping the law.
2. The Law and Prophets Testify- The old Testament taught as well
3. ALL have sinned- Thus, Christians are not GOOD people, they are sinners too
4. all can be FREELY justified (They cannot earn it or pay it back)
5. through Jesus Christ who died for our sins so we don’t have to be punished for our sins

Got all that? If you decide to highlight key parts, print it out first or you’ll ruin your computer monitor.

OK, now let’s add in the accusation that we are self-righteous, religious hypocrites. The first thing this accusation admits to is the existence of the Gospel, and the fact that the Bible does NOT teach that we are saved, made holy, or even made better than other sinners by doing good (i.e. obeying the law). If the message of the Bible was “Do good, avoid evil, and this will earn you God’s favor,” then the self-righteous would not be hypocrites. They would simply be dedicated to the teaching that they are made righteous because of themselves. They would be Right. They are hypocrites because they claim to be Christians (Saved freely through Jesus Christ, apart from the law, apart from anything they have done) and yet think, talk, and act as though they had saved themselves. It’s BECAUSE they claim to be Christians that they are hypocrites. It’s BECAUSE of the Gospel of grace that they are hypocrites.

Finally, and this was my big revelation, self-righteous religious hypocrites would NEVER have invented the Gospel. To claim they would is asking us to imagine this religious founder: “Look at how good I am because of all the good things I do and all of the bad things I don’t do! Behold, dirty sinners, my radiant glory! Clearly I am forgiven by God’s grace alone and can not brag about anything. I am better than all of you because of my dedication to religious works. Plus, outside of God’s loving mercy, I am deserving only of his wrath.” How skitzo would THAT guy have to be?

Would a self-righteous religious person say that? Of course not. They would say, “I am accepted by God because of how good I am. God’s pretty impressed with me, and you should be too. Now buy my books and inspirational wall calendar.”
The idea that we become acceptable to God (or gods or goddess or the popular kids or network TV, etc) by earning our way up is the core of EVERY religion or philosophy in the world through all time EXCEPT Biblical Christianity (And thereby true Judaism). In EVERY faith and philosophy you climb the stairway to heaven. “There it is!” they will teach you. “There is the stairway to heaven! Start climbing! Good luck! We’ll see you up there if you make it. And you better hurry before we run out of buffalo wings.”

When even those who profess to be Christians are self-righteous, and every other faith and philosophy that ever existed is based on your own personal merit, how can we possibly believe that ANYONE invented the Gospel? Why would they even WANT to? The gospel doesn’t let you claim to be self-made, truly good, or even simply better than anyone else. It only allows you to accept your sin and God’s mercy- and who wants to admit to being a sinner? We don’t want a moral law that condemns us. We want a moral law that we can use to condemn OTHERS. That sells the stuff over on the merch table.

My conclusion then makes sense: Because of the pride inherent in the human race, even in those who claim to be Christians, we can reject the notion that religious people invented the Gospel. Non-religious people wouldn’t invent a system that includes admitting to our guilt and sin. The only logical conclusion, therefore, is that God is the author of the Gospel and revealed it to us through the law and the prophets and the apostles and the Bible and Jesus Christ.

Now, my friends, it is time for you to put down your toothbrush and render your verdict. I have been accused of being a Christian, and I hope that I have given sufficient evidence with which to convict me on this charge. I have been accused of being self-righteous, and with shame I admit that this is so. I have been accused of therefore being a hypocrite, and because of the Gospel of Grace, it is so. My self-righteousness is hypocritical. I am guilty. Let the record show that my guilt proves beyond the shadow of a doubt the existence, involvement, love, mercy, and grace of God through Jesus Christ.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, I rest my case.
